Built in 1783, Kon Khaen was then the capital of Thailand's poorest northeastern province. Today the city spans the eastern side of the province of the same name and is an important center of education, trade and essential transportation hub for the Isaan region. Most foreigners who pass through here do so for business purposes, although slowly the province is beginning to be known for tourism-related reasons. Considered the heart of Isaan, Khon Kaen has a population of about 400,000 making it one of the largest cities in Thailand. With an enrollment of more than 25,000, Khon Kaen University is the largest in the northeast. It is a modern city with many buildings reaching 30 stories, fashionable shopping malls, and large international chain hotels. Certainly there is no shortage of different attractions: some neighborhoods in the north of the city are still graced with old wooden houses, and Bueng Kaen Nakhon Lake, a long tree-lined boulevard that runs alongside the lake, provides a nice relaxing scenic stretch at the southernmost point of the city. Jumping back between 65 and 145 million years ago, in the Cretaceous period, dinosaurs of various shapes and sizes roamed the lands that now comprise Khon Kaen province by the thousands.
Since the late 1970s, archaeologists at sites that are now part of Phu Wiang National Park have unearthed many fossils and skeletons, including an unknown ancestor of the T-Rex. Khon Kaen is a large province with many attractions to discover. One could go east at the Khmer ruins at Prasat Puay Noi; southwest to see the beautiful "mudmee" silk made at the Chonnabot Community; northeast to Baan Khok Sa-Nga, where locals raise king cobras and treat them as pets. Every year in April, Khon Kaen puts on one of the largest water-splashing shows for the annual Songkran (Thai New Year) festival-a great option if you'd like to celebrate away from the tourist crowds.
